Basshunter Dota

Basshunter Pays Homage to His Love of Dota.

It is common for musicians to write about what they are passionate about. Whether it be their significant other, their career, their fetishes, or their belief systems. But some, choose the more creative route. In 2006, Basshunter, a Swedish DJ, released a song about what captivates him most: playing Warcraft.

This particular track focuses on Defense of the Ancients. Defense of the Ancients is a unique game sequence that was created by a World of Warcraft developer via Warcraft World Editor for World of Warcraft III. World Editor enables users to devise their own missions, character levels, and objectives. In Defense of the Ancients, two teams battle each other in an attempt to destroy the opposing party’s “Ancient”. The “Ancient” is a structure that lies in the center of each team’s base. Soon after the cultivation of DotA, an Allstars version was released, and is currently being implemented in many cyber-gaming competitions around the world.

Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” is not a huge metaphor, or anything clever, it is pretty blunt, and straight to the point. The direct translation of the song title is, “We are sitting in Ventrilo, playing DotA”, and the music video for the track depicts the mother of the DJ observing him and his friends playing this specific game, and furthermore, scolding him for it. Ventrilo is the additive that allows other players to talk amongst each other during the game. Scenes from the music video include Basshunter playing the world-renowned game,as well as, performing live at one of largest local area network parties known to man.

Due to World of Warcraft’s and Dota’s popularity in Europe (and basically the world at that point), the song gained a significant amount of notoriety. The exact release date of “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” was October 3, 2006. The song is available on Basshunter’s album, LOL <(^^,)>. That same year, “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” placed second on the charts in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. It was also featured on the Dutch Top 40, and on Tracklisten.

The original “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA”, is actually a remix of an earlier Basshunter track entitled, “Daddy DJ”. As “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” furthered its reputation amongst gamers and techno freaks alike, Basshunter decided to release a version for native English Speakers. In this version, he changed the lyrics to appear more like a dance-oriented love ballad, which he eventually titled, “All I Ever Wanted”. Its popularity in the UK skyrocketed, and its 2008 debut peaked at number two on the UK charts. To cater to the multitudes of fans, Basshunter is currently working on a German rendition of the reputed song.
